'Cowboys & Aliens' Director Jon Favreau Offers Trailer Play-By-Play

Favreau sits down with MTV News to talk about opening scene, villainous Harrison Ford and a 'mistake' fans found in the sneak peek.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

"Iron Man" director Jon Favreau sure knows how to cut a trailer. Going back to his sneak peek for the first "Iron Man" — which brought down the house at that year's San Diego Comic-Con — to the debut of the highly anticipated "Cowboys & Aliens" trailer last week, Favreau seems to be an expert at getting fans into a frenzy.

Due in large part to the response from the trailer, and our own excitement for Favreau's upcoming flick, MTV News caught up with the man himself at his editing bay in Santa Monica, California, for a play-by-play look at his titillating teaser.
"This is new for me," Favreau said of commenting on his trailer. "I'm already doing a commentary track on a [trailer]. I'm in the middle of [editing] my director's cut."
Beginning with the first shot — in which a rough-and-tumble Daniel Craig wakes with a start to discover a mysterious metal band on his arm — Favreau addressed the challenge of melding two genres: Western and sci-fi.
"When you're doing a mash-up of two genres, if you play with either of them tongue-in-cheek, the combo is not going to be what's special," he said. "It allowed us to play Western pretty dead straight."
Also, that opening shot will likely be the film's opening sequence too. "It's the first shot — I'm in my director's cut, but right now, this is essentially how the movie starts," Favreau revealed, adding that the credit for that opening goes to executive producer Steven Spielberg. "The writers told me when Spielberg was developing the script, this was one of his big ideas, this [opening] image."
Another arresting image in the teaser is iconic actor Harrison Ford looking not-so-Harrison-Ford-like but rather grizzly and villainous. Favreau explained that he wants fans to see another side of their favorite actor, with shades of Han Solo and Indiana Jones.
"When Harrison comes into the movie, how do you separate him from everything he's done? How do you present him in a way that I, as a fan, would want to see him?" Favreau said of the challenge in having Ford portray a seemingly villainous character. "He was always this bastard with a big heart; that's the archetype I like for him.
"Everybody's got kind of a rough edge," Favreau added. "This is a genre film."
One more aspect to touch on, via hundreds of comments on the Internet, is a certain shot in which fans claimed that they could see a wire pulling an actor into the air; Favreau said that was no accident.
"When you see more about the way the aliens work, there is a device that they abduct people with that that is a practical element of," he explained. "It's not a mistake — we didn't miss the paint-out — but thanks to the people playing at home. If you could catch that, I'm very proud."
Favreau ended his first trailer play-by-play with a good-natured "thank you" to all the fans.
"We're working hard. Thanks to all of you for putting wind in our sails," he said. "I'm glad you liked what we put out there."

In the weeks leading up to the release of "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1," much of the hype has surrounded where the first film ends and how much it might have strayed from the books. But when it came to the movie's New York premiere Monday night (November 15) and MTV News' live stream of the event, a considerable amount of our viewers were fixated on Emma Watson's newly shorn locks and her lovely red-carpet dress.
When we caught up with Watson just before she ducked into the theater, we informed her that 90 percent of our viewers had given her wardrobe choice — a specially made Calvin Klein gown — an enthusiastic thumbs-up in an MTV News online poll.

'21 Jump Street' Adaptation Eyes Channing Tatum To Star

Actor reportedly at the top of Sony's wish list for the Jonah Hill-starring movie.By Eric Ditzian

Channing Tatum

Photo: Paramount Pictures

While there's still no word if Johnny Depp will step in front of the camera when production on "21 Jump Street" kicks off in the spring of 2011, it's looking like co-writer/star Jonah Hill might have found his "Jump Street" co-star in Channing Tatum.
Deadline New York reported that Tatum is at the top of Sony's wish list to play the lead character and that he will soon be entering negotiations to sign on to the project. According to the Deadline report, Sony auditioned a number of actors for the role but Hill and Tatum "matched up well."
Neither Tatum's nor Hill's reps responded to MTV News' request for comment as of press time.
The "21 Jump Street" casting story we've been keeping an eye on since early in 2008 has been whether or not Depp will pop up for a cameo in the big-screen adaptation, possibly reprising the TV role that launched him toward superstardom in the late '80s.
We've asked Hill countless times about the potential Depp cameo, as well directors Phil Lord and Chris Miller. We even asked Depp himself, who said, "If we find the right thing to do, it could be very funny."
As for the rumors that "Zombieland" star Emma Stone will also star in "Jump Street," Hill told us recently, "I can't say anything to the negative or the positive of that. I think we'll have some cool casting announcements to make very, very soon."
And what about Depp? "Hopefully, he does it. It would be awesome if he did it," Hill said, adding with a smile, "Just do it, dude. Don't be an a--hole. Just be in the movie."

Martin Sheen In Talks To Play Uncle Ben In 'Spider-Man'

Reboot begins production next month and hits theaters in July 2012.By Kara Warner

Martin Sheen

Photo: Alberto E. Rodriguez/Getty Images

Breaking news regarding your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man and Sony's highly anticipated reboot: Martin Sheen is in final negotiations to play Peter Parker's Uncle Ben.
The Hollywood Reporter broke the story, and a rep from Sony has confirmed the report to MTV News.
Those familiar with the comics know that Uncle Ben is an important part of the future web-slinger's life. He and his wife May take in Parker after his parents are killed and raise him as their own. Given Sheen's impressive résumé and reputation — he most recently delighted TV audiences for seven seasons with his lovable portrayal or President Jed Bartlett on "The West Wing" — Sheen seems a good fit for Uncle Ben.
Of course, if Marc Webb's reboot stays true to Spidey's history, Ben eventually meets an untimely end at the hands of a burglar. Naturally, no plot details have been revealed about the new "Spider-Man." But as far as casting, Andrew Garfield will play Peter Parker, Emma Stone will play Gwen Stacy and Rhys Ifans will play the Lizard.
Webb did admit previously that they're searching high and low for all the right actors to fill roles. "We're casting a wide net," he told MTV News. "That's really all I can say at this moment."
Other casting rumors include two actors allegedly up for the role of feisty Daily Bugle editor J. Jonah Jameson: "Mad Men" silver fox John Slattery and veteran actor Sam Elliott.
"Spider-Man" is set to begin production in December and will hit theaters in 3-D on July 3, 2012.
Check out everything we've got on "Spider-Man."

Robert Downey Jr. Is 'Challenging For The Right Reasons,' Says 'Due Date' Director

'All that Robert cares about is elevating the material at all times,' director Todd Phillips says.By Josh Wigler, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Robert Downey Jr. in "Due Date"

Photo: Warner Bros.

Robert Downey Jr. boasts one of the greatest assortment of characters of anyone in Hollywood, but that doesn't necessarily make him the easiest man to work with. Among Downey's many fine qualities is his inability to be anybody but himself — except when in character, of course — which almost always makes for a very memorable interview.

It apparently makes for an interesting filmmaking experience as well, as "Due Date" director Todd Phillips recently explained.
"Robert is a very challenging actor," the director told MTV News. "He's just a challenging person, and I think he's challenging for the right reasons. It's always about elevating the material. Robert is never challenging about, "My trailer needs to be parked closer to the set" or "I need this type of food" or "Don't look in my eyes." All that Robert cares about is elevating the material at all times."
Phillips said he was never tempted to hold Downey back over the course of shooting "Due Date," particularly because the actor's charged personality pushed the director to get more creative in the filmmaking process.
"You never try to wrangle, really," he said. "The last thing we want to do on a comedy is rein people in, so I kind of appreciate that energy that [Downey and co-star Zach Galifianakis] have, that kind of connection — or lack of connection in a way — and I think it works for the movie. But it can be hard."
It certainly doesn't hurt that Downey has been singing Phillips' praises lately, having told MTV News that the "Due Date" director is his soul mate. The compliments aren't lost on Phillips, who confessed: "It's amazing. Having grown up and seen his movies — Julian in "Less Than Zero" and some of these iconic characters — just watching that as we grew up and now to be working with him, and having him go out and say that [I'm] one of the best directors he's ever worked with or 'Due Date' is the best experience making a film ... it's crazy, surreal and very humbling."

'True Blood' Star Ryan Kwanten Struggled With Aussie Accent In 'Red Hill'

'As ridiculous as it sounds, there was quite an adjustment period,' says the Australia native.By Amy Wilkinson

Ryan Kwanten

Photo: MTV News

American audiences familiar with Ryan Kwanten's work on the sexy vampire drama "True Blood" will see a different side of him in his latest project, the feature film "Red Hill." The movie, which hits theaters today, is a Western thriller set in rural Australia. And Kwanten is speaking with his natural Aussie accent — something that proved challenging for the 33-year-old actor.

"It was actually kind of bizarre because I had been working in the States for eight years, and I was so used to hearing the word, 'Action,' and jumping into a form of the American accent," he told MTV News (in his Aussie accent). "This was the first time in eight years I had done this particular voice [while working as an actor], and as ridiculous as it sounds, there was quite an adjustment period."
While he never accidentally slipped into Jason Stackhouse's Southern drawl while on the "Red Hill" set, his Yankee résumé didn't escape his costars' notice. "The crew called me Captain Hollywood for a while," he said with a chuckle.
Stepping back into his natural accent wasn't the only challenge Kwanten faced while portraying a country cop hunting an escaped convict. To get to the remote, 150-person hamlet where "Red Hill" was shot, the cast and crew had to embark on treacherous six-hour drives through the Australian countryside. "I may as well have been shooting in Antarctica because it was such a remote, one-horse town," Kwanten said.
But the rugged setting proved integral to the film's narrative. "I feel like the isolation and the huge mountain countryside was somewhat of a character," he said, "because as the film progressed, it added to that feeling of claustrophobia."

Tom Cruise Leaves Red Roses For Katie Holmes "Everywhere She Goes"

Katie Holmes is currently out promoting her upcoming movie "The Romantics", so it's the perfect opportunity to ask her about husband Tom Cruise's romantic side.
Katie shared a little private tidbit with Parade:
"My husband has red roses for me everywhere I go."
Doesn't Tom worry that if a delivery is delayed or doesn't show up or something like that - that she'll be thinking something's wrong? ;) That's a lot to live up to - sending them everywhere she goes! It's very sweet!
She also chatted about what drew her to this movie:
"I really loved the script when I read it. It felt a lot like The Big Chill and St. Elmo's Fire and also a little bit of a John Hughes feeling, and I always loved those movies growing up.
She shared her respect for the other actors and actresses involved in the film:
"It was great to work with this wonderful cast and director. I was floored by the performances. These guys are such incredible actors. It was really inspiring every single day because you'd watch somebody else do a scene and you'd be like, 'OK, wow. I didn't know that was what it was about.' They brought something so different and wonderful. It was such a great time, I think that's why we all still hang out and we go to dinner often and we're a tight-knit group."
Are you looking forward to this movie? I'm excited about the huge, talented cast: Josh Duhamel, Anna Paquin, Elijah Wood, Malin Akerman, Candice Bergen, and Adam Brody. More importantly - how often does your significant other send you flowers?

'Girl With The Dragon Tattoo' Star Says She's 'Done' With Lisbeth Salander

'I've moved on and I don't want to repeat myself,' she says of the Swedish adaptations of Stieg Larsson's 'Millennium' trilogy.By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Noomi Rapace

Photo: MTV News

There's probably a country somewhere in the world where Stieg Larsson's "Millennium" trilogy hasn't become a best-seller. For years, the Swedish author's crime thrillers — starting with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo" and concluding with "The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest" — have been flying out of bookstores all over the world.

But as Larsson fans know, the series about journalist Mikael Blomkvist and hacker Lisbeth Salander may not be over. Though Larsson died in 2004, he reportedly completed three-quarters of a fourth "Millennium" book, and he may have even started on a fifth.
The first three novels have already been made into Swedish films; in those movies, Salander was portrayed by Noomi Rapace, an actress now co-starring in the sequel to "Sherlock Holmes" and rumored to be up for the "Alien" prequel.
Though the "Millennium" films have launched Rapace to international stardom, she has vowed never again to play Salander, even if films were to be crafted from Larsson's other manuscripts.
"It's done. I'm done with her," she told MTV News while promoting "The Girl who Kicked the Hornet's Nest." "I did everything I could and she was in my life very strong for one and a half years, and then I left her. I've moved on and I don't want to repeat myself."
Stepping into the role of a character who has become something of a folk hero in Sweden was no easy task: She spent more than half a year learning to kickbox and ride a motorcycle, and she had to overhaul her eating habits to more closely resemble the small-framed Salander.
"When I was preparing, I did a lot of physical things and I felt like she was coming," Rapace explained. "I didn't want to force her. ... I drove a lot of motorcycles and I was on a diet, so my body changed slowly into her. Then I felt like she was coming. It was like small puzzle pieces that came into the right places."
Rapace is ready to turn the page.
"[Larsson] wrote three books and no one really knows how much there really is," she said. "There's a lot of rumors and I feel like it's better to leave it and say, 'This is it, OK, bye, now I'm off to something else and to new things.' "
Check out everything we've got on "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo."

Liam Neeson Rumored to Inherit Mel Gibson's 'Hangover 2' Cameo

Robin Williams, Kurt Russell also listed as possibilities for the sequel.By Kara Warner

Now that Mel Gibson is officially out of "The Hangover 2," the busy bees at Warner Bros. Pictures have been scrambling to replace their high-profile celeb cameo with another big name. According to Variety, the studio is going after A-list actor Liam Neeson for the role.
A source close to the production confirmed to MTV News that the "Taken" actor is at the top of the studio's wishlist, but added that a few other established names have been circulating as well: Robin Williams and Kurt Russell.
There is no word on whether the cameo role is the same one Gibson was supposed to play (a tattoo artist), only that Warner Bros. is "very happy" with the script and wants a veteran actor to fill the now-high profile cameo.
Director Todd Phillips said in a statement recently that he wanted Gibson in the film, but that not everyone agreed with the casting.
"I thought Mel would have been great in the movie," Phillips said in a statement. "And I had the full backing of [WB President] Jeff Robinov and his team. But I realize filmmaking is a collaborative effort, and this decision ultimately did not have the full support of my entire cast and crew."
"Hangover" breakout star Zach Galifianakis reportedly was the most upset with Gibson's cameo and hinted to Comedy Death-Ray Radio host Scott Aukerman that he was upset about a recent turn of events related to a film on which he's currently working.
"But a movie you're acting in, you don't have a lot of control: You just show up and vomit your lines out," Galifianakis said. "I'm not the boss. I'm in a deep protest right now with a movie I'm working on, up in arms about something. But I can't get the guys to [listen] ... I'm not making any leeway."

'Breaking Dawn' Star Dakota Fanning In Talks For 'If I Stay'

Actress may star in Heitor Dhalia-directed film based on Gayle Forman's young adult novel.By Eric Ditzian

Summit Entertainment likes to keep its "Twilight" stars in the family. The studio kept Robert Pattinson in the mix with romantic drama "Remember Me" and cut another check to Billy Burke for the upcoming action flick "Drive Angry." Then there's Dakota Fanning, who not only starred in the sci-fi "Push" but in the last two "Twilight" flicks as well. And as she gears up for work on "Breaking Dawn," she just might be staying put with Summit.
The 16-year-old actress is in talks to star in Summit's "If I Stay," a supernatural story adapted from Gayle Forman's young adult novel, according to Variety.
"Twilight" director Catherine Hardwicke was originally attached to direct the film, with Summit chief Erik Feig saying in 2009, "When we were thinking of the perfect director to capture the emotion, grace and passion of this beautiful book, one filmmaker became the clear and only choice: Catherine Hardwicke." But now Hardwicke is out — off to direct "Red Riding Hood" with Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman — and Brazilian director Heitor Dhalia is in.
"If I Stay" follows a gifted classical musician named Mia (to be played by Fanning) and her indie rocker boyfriend. Mia and her family suffer a devastating car accident, leaving the young girl trapped between life and death and forced to decide if she has the will to live.
There's no word yet about when the film will shift into production, but Fanning should be busy for a while with the two parts of "Breaking Dawn."

Vince Vaughn 'Dilemma' Trailer's 'Gay' Joke To Be Cut

Universal Pictures will replace 'insensitive' preview scene from upcoming flick.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Vince Vaughn and Anderson Cooper

Photo: Getty Images

The Vince Vaughn vehicle "The Dilemma" is already running into problems of its own after promotion of the film recently kicked off. Following an outcry over the use in the trailer of the word 'gay' as a derogatory zing, Universal Pictures has announced the preview will be reworked.
"The teaser trailer for 'The Dilemma' was not intended to cause anyone discomfort," the studio said in a statement released Friday (October 8). "In light of growing claims that the introduction to the trailer is insensitive, it is being replaced. A full trailer, which has been in the works for some time, will post online later today."
The comedy has drawn high-profile criticism from the likes of CNN anchor Anderson Cooper and talk show host Ellen DeGeneres for the use of the word "gay" in a joke in the movie's trailer. In a version of the preview that has been circulating online, Vaughn's character holds court in a boardroom and says, "Electric cars are gay. I mean, not 'homosexual' gay but 'my parents are chaperoning the dance' gay."
"I was sitting ... in a movie theater over the weekend, and there was a preview of a movie, and in it the actor said, 'That's so gay.' And I was shocked ... not only that they put that in the movie, but that they put that in the preview, they thought that was okay to put it in the preview to the movie to get people to go and see it," Cooper said on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on Wednesday. "We gotta do something to make those words ... unacceptable, 'cause those words are hurting kids."
Gay-rights organization GLAAD also weighed in on the controversy.
"The use of the word 'gay' in this trailer as a slur is unnecessary and does nothing more than send a message of intolerance about our community to viewers," GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios said.
The uproar comes after the tragic suicides of teens such as Tyler Clementi and Seth Walsh pushed anti-gay bullying into the spotlight and the debate surrounding the repeal of the U.S. armed forces' controversial "don't ask, don't tell" policy.
What do you think about the use of the word "gay" in "The Dilemma" trailer? Sound off in the comments.

'Pineapple Express 2' Could Go In 'Scarface' Direction, Director Says

'I want to see them in the Miami coke scene. It could get a little gruesome,' David Gordon Green tells us at New York Comic Con.By Eric Ditzian, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

James Franco and Seth Rogen in "Pineapple Express"

Photo: Sony

Someone make a dinner reservation for James Franco, Seth Rogen, David Gordon Green and the rest of the folks involved in "Pineapple Express," OK? That's the first stumbling block preventing a sequel to their 2008 comedy, and not until everyone breaks bread together will there be any hope of "Pineapple Express 2" kicking into action.

"We talk about it all the time," Green, who directed the film, told MTV News while promoting "Your Highness" at New York Comic Con. "We keep talking to the studio. They're going to organize a dinner someday. This dinner has been talked about for about two years now, where we're going to get together and throw all the millions of ideas we have into a pot and see if there's any reason to make that movie."
While hanging out in our skybox at NYCC, Green revealed a few story ideas that, in our humble opinion, most definitely seem a worthy extension of the story of two stoners - Franco and Rogen - pulled into the violent world of high-stakes marijuana dealing.
"The most interesting spin is to go in the 'Scarface' direction," Green told us. "I want to see them in the Miami coke scene. It could get a little gruesome."
"Or take it in the 'Clear and Present Danger' direction and go to South America," he added.
Green's not the only one interested in a sequel. Franco told us earlier in the year about his enthusiasm for another "Pineapple," and Evan Goldberg, who co-wrote the original script, is excited as well. And Rogen told us, "Of all the movies we've done, that's the only one that I would actually like to do a sequel to and we talk about it."
For now, though, Sony Pictures has got to get all these guys around a dinner table. "There are a few avenues that are maybe worthy of a little bit more than a barroom napkin scribble of an idea," Green said.
Check out everything we've got on "Your Highness."

'Social Network' Cheat Sheet: Everything You Need To Know!

We friended this production a long time ago, and this is what we've learned.By Eric Ditzian

Jesse Eisenberg in "The Social Network"

Photo: Sony Pictures

"The Social Network" is a whodunit for the Internet age. Was the billion-dollar behemoth known as Facebook solely the idea of Mark Zuckerberg, a flip-flop-wearing hacker at Harvard? Or did he lie, cheat and steal his way toward Web glory, leaving wronged classmates in his egocentric wake?
That's the central question David Fincher explores in his new film, penned by Aaron Sorkin and starring Jesse Eisenberg as Zuckerberg. The film delivers no easy answers, just a riveting, two-hour ride showcasing the creative energy and energetic backstabbing of young entrepreneurs in Cambridge and Silicon Valley.

MTV News friended the production early on, following every casting development and trailer release since the project was announced. Before you hit the theater this weekend, point and click your way toward total information awareness with MTV News' "Social Network" cheat sheet.
Friending Hollywood
Word leaked in June of last year that Fincher was circling the rather-straightforward project, a curious move for a director known for such a distinct visual style. What would a guy who brought Tyler Durden of "Fight Club" and John Doe of "Seven" to the screen do with a nerd from the Ivy League?
By the next month, there was still no official announcement about Fincher's involvement, and when we asked producer Kevin Spacey about his helming duties, Spacey responded, "I think we are close to announcing a director." September came, Fincher had signed on, and the search was on for the actor to play Zuckerberg. Names that cropped up on the Web included Eisenberg, Michael Cera and Paul Rust, but the role eventually went to Eisenberg (who'd previously issued MTV News a non-denial denial of his involvement. Justin Timberlake came aboard at the same time, followed by Andrew Garfield, Rooney Mara and Max Minghella.
"I just made a tape, probably 20 pages of dialogue, and sent in the tape because I live in New York City and they were casting in California," Eisenberg told us in January about the casting process. "Then they called me for a meeting. It was fairly painless."
Removing Privacy Settings
By that point, filming was already under way. The first official look at the film didn't arrive until June, delivering the memorable tagline, "You don't get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies." The first teaser trailer dropped days later and contained not a single frame from the actual movie, just voice-overs and all-caps words like "punk" and "genius." As odd as it sounds, the trailer was as perfect as a teaser trailer can be. A second teaser popped up the next month: still with no film footage but with similarly intense voice-overs and imagery from Facebook pages themselves.
Not until the middle of July did we get our first glimpse of real "Social Network" footage. Set to a choral take on Radiohead's "Creep," the trailer gave us snappy dialogue, looks at Harvard's boozy social life and the backstabbing that began even before Facebook went online.
Status Updates
As the film's October release date approached, the cast began to speak more openly about the production. "Why actors love working with [Fincher] and why I loved working with him is because you try a scene in 200 different ways; you know he is able to edit together several different performances for each role," Eisenberg told us. "We would be often doing half the scene 60 times one way, then 60 times a little more engaged."
Timberlake spoke with us about how the film is potentially divisive. His personal experience was that some of his friends sided with Zuckerberg's version of events, while others agreed with his adversaries. "But one of my friends specifically said ... 'I don't 100 percent agree with any of the characters, but I don't disagree with any of them,' " Timberlake said. "Life is life. Things happen sloppily."
Life can also be cruel, which is why, even after making a movie so intimately tied to Internet culture, Eisenberg avoids reading about himself online at all costs. "I know that I'm written about online — we're all written about online," he told us. "It's incredibly painful to read it, so I stay off of it. People can write things that are terribly cruel because of the anonymity of the Internet."
Check out everything we've got on "The Social Network."

Ashley Tisdale And Aly Michalka Celebrate Magazine Cover And A New TV Show

Ashley Tisdale (High School Musical, Phineas and Ferb) and Aly Michalka (Band Slam, Phil of the Future) were in attendance at a private party thrown for them by Seventeen magazine. The two young women were there to celebrate the October cover of the magazine, and also to share their excitement about their upcoming TV show: "Hellcats".
In the October issue Ashley shares how her list of qualities in a boyfriend has changed since high school:
"In high school, it was all about popularity, being with the boyfriend and all the girls thinking he's cute. Now, I am more into a guy's personality. I like someone I can have fun with and who can be more laid-back than I am, because it calms me down. At the same time, I want to be with someone who wants to work as much as I do and who respects me like I respect him."
Aly is honest in admitting that she doesn't have a boyfriend, but would love to have one:
" I'm not - I wish. I'm so ready to have boyfriend. I just need to find that guy who's worthy of committing myself to, because I'm not your average girl. And I think a lot of guys are intimidated by girls who know what they want. I still live at home when I am in L.A., I'm really close to my family, I have a busy life and I'm super-close to my sister - so basically if you date me, you date her. And he's either into it or he's not."
I love that they both sound very strong and firm about what they're looking for in a guy. Don't give in and stay picky. ;)
"Hellcats" premieres on the CW this Thursday night. It's a comedy/drama about the competitive world of college cheer leading. I put one of the promo clips under the jump if you're curious.

Guillermo Del Toro Says 'The Fall' Vampires 'Don't Sparkle'

Director says parasitic blood-suckers in his novel 'won't take you to dinner. You will be dinner.'By Eric Ditzian

Guillermo del Toro

Photo: MTV News

Guillermo del Toro is a jolly fellow. You'll be 20 minutes into a conversation filled with jokey repartee and his self-deprecating asides, and you'll think: This is the guy who unleashed a swarm of killer cockroaches on a city full of children in "Mimic"?

Then, suddenly, a fuse will blow in the studio, and as your crew scrambles to re-light the set, del Toro will say, with a mix of charm and do-not-cross-me gravity, "My DP would punch you!"
But his director of photography is nowhere to be seen, nor are plague-laden roaches, and all soon returns to normal. Del Toro is here to chat about "The Fall," the second book in his trilogy (co-written with Chuck Hogan), about a parasitic epidemic turning a city's population into blood-sucking vampires. It's grim material, no doubt, but the director-turned-novelist talks ebulliently, almost from start to finish, about the book, its influences and its development.
He's got a right to be happy. Like the first installment, "The Fall" became a bestseller, thanks to robust pre-orders before it even hit shelves Tuesday. And, having dealt with a heartbreaking, years-long struggle to make "The Hobbit," del Toro is energized to be temporarily working outside the Hollywood machine, writing fiction about a subject he's been obsessed with since the age of 7.
The Oscar nominee is getting set to dive back into moviemaking, of course, and is deep into preproduction on his 3-D collaboration with James Cameron, "At the Mountains of Madness."
That, too, is a project he's been dreaming about for decades. Yet to hear del Toro talk about "The Fall" is to realize the special place fiction holds in his creative heart. And it doesn't hurt that the book is one kick-ass page-turner.
MTV: I'm, first of all, curious about the process. You've written screenplays with other people; you've now written two books with Chuck Hogan. How do those two processes differ, if at all?
Guillermo del Toro: It's much better than writing solo. Writing the books is very similar to writing the screenplays with collaborators. For the books, we get together for what Chuck terms "a four-day breakfast." We talk and eat, and eat and talk. Eventually, we figure out everything we want about the book, we go away, we generate a 30-page outline, and then we call dibs: "I want this section. I want that section." I think I get all the fun sections. I write them and send them to him, and when I get his sections, I realize he got a lot of fun sections, and I get envious and rewrite them. He rewrites my stuff, and we go from there. It becomes a single voice.
MTV: There's more of an action vibe in the second book than in the first. Was that one of the goals, to mix much more action into your horror story?
Del Toro: Chuck says that we got together on the first one and took our Legos and created the city and the characters, and on the second, we finally get to play with them, and on the third, we're going to destroy it.
MTV: The vampires in the trilogy are unique compared to other depictions of vampires in popular culture in that vampirism is a disease. Where'd the idea come from? Any specific sources?
Del Toro: During the Age of Enlightenment, there were plagues in Europe and vampiric panics that led to ransacking of graveyards and desecration of corpses. There was mass hysteria about vampires. I thought that in this age of GPS and iPhones, the only thing that reverts us to primitive fear is a viral epidemic. Immediately, you see people wearing masks and not opening mail for fear of anthrax. And if you talk to these people, most of them have no idea how anything is transmitted. It's very superstitious. I thought it would be great to recreate vampires biologically, explain how they work, and make them scary again. I've been reading vampiric folklore since I was 7. I know more about vampires than I know about my cousins.
MTV: What is the lure of telling this story in book form, as opposed to, say, in comic books, video games or as a TV series?
Del Toro: The only way to really track the epidemic was the long-arc form. You could have done it as a TV series or books. The freedom you get by doing it as books is you get to establish the characters and the world the way you want it. You don't get any notes from studio executives and TV executives. You don't test it with an audience. You don't have to get feedback. You don't mind about ratings. You do everything you want. It was a liberating thing to do it that way. I found it to be, personally, as a fat human being, an escape pod from really constrictive screenplay writing, especially within the studio environment. I really love writing fiction. It's like an amusement park for me. I have no end of fun.
MTV: And it's an excuse to have four-day breakfasts with your friends.
Del Toro: Everything I do, I feel like I'm a very well-financed child. I just do everything I dreamt of doing as a kid, and I get to do it with the friends I like. Someone puts us in a room together, and we build a city that is crazy, and we get in costumes and play, and then you have dinner with those people. It's like camp for abnormal kids. I'm deeply abnormal, so I am very happy.
MTV: When the trilogy concludes, will that ending be final or does the possibility exist for the stories of any of these characters to continue?
Del Toro: We don't want to return to it. We really want to close it on the third book. I would love to continue to do a short story now and then about the world or the characters, but with the novel form, we will close on the third one. The arc ends.
MTV: I don't need to tell you how popular vampire fiction is these days. In your interactions with fans, in readings and whatnot, have you found a lot of overlap with fans of "Twilight" or "The Vampire Diaries," or is it very much a separate crowd?
Del Toro: There is room for fans of vampire romance to look for the nastiest vampires. Our trilogy is dedicated to a parasitic feeding entity. These guys don't sparkle. They won't take you to dinner. You will be dinner. They are mouths with a stomach and a collective brain — the terrifying inhuman aspect of vampirism. The other aspect is perfectly genuine, and I don't put it down, but it's an area I have no interest in. I'm not attracted to the Byronian badboy that vampires can be. That's an analogy I don't pursue. But we do find people that are reading both types of fiction and enjoying it. Diversity is the key to happiness.
MTV: When the first book came out, you said you talked with Fox about a TV show, and it didn't work out. This time around, have you tried to go back to the networks or cable?
Del Toro: When the first one was on the bestseller list, we got a lot of calls. Some of the people we pitched it to originally called back. We don't want to turn it into anything. We want to wait until the third book because we don't want to think about it any other way than just books. You don't want to contaminate it. We got approached by studios wanting to turn them into movies. I don't feel comfortable with that. I don't know if I ever will. We're going to do stuff in the third book that is pretty hardcore. I don't know if we'd be able to preserve it. But, look, my favorite stuff is on TV right now.
"Breaking Bad" is exceptionally good. At my household, we consider "Dexter" a family show. Partnering up with somebody like that would be fantastic.

Zach Galifianakis Talks 'It's Kind Of A Funny Story' Directing Duo

'I think they have the same amount of influence,' he says of Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.By Kara Warner, with reporting by Josh Horowitz

Zach Galifianakis is following up his star-making and outrageous role in last year's "The Hangover" with a slightly more subdued turn in "It's Kind of a Funny Story," the latest film from "Half Nelson" writer/director team Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden.
In the film, which is based on the 2006 semiautobiographical novel by Ned Vizzini, Galifianakis plays Bobby, a patient in the psych ward of the Brooklyn Argenon Hospital, who becomes a mentor of sorts to Craig Gilner (Keir Gilchrist), a potentially suicidal 16-year-old who checks himself into the hospital.

When we caught up with Galifianakis recently, we asked him how having two directors changed the filmmaking process and if he had any questions for the directing duo before he signed onto the project.
"I had a few questions. One of them was: 'When are the lunch breaks?' 'How long are the lunch breaks?' and 'Is this a Pixar film?' Because those are my three rules," he joked. "No, the script was good, I really liked the directors, and that's kind of what I based it on."
Regarding Fleck and Boden's directing style, Galifianakis said the duo were very organized yet laid-back at the same time.
"Ryan does most of the talking, and Anna is in the background a little bit," he explained. "But equally, I think they have the same amount of influence, but they're very, very good directors. They're soft-spoken and nice. It was a pleasure working with them."
"It's Kind of a Funny Story" opens in New York and Los Angeles on October 8 and also features Viola Davis, Lauren Graham and up-and-comer Emma Roberts.
Check out everything we've got on "It's Kind of a Funny Story."
